"Clem Benton has proven to be an extremely committed mentor for the students in our district and has been a great inspiration to both staff and students during our special community and school-based events. It has been a pleasure having Clem serve as an advisor to some of our staff and mentor to our students through our Heritage Leadership Camp. His commitment for academic excellence for all students and his integrity have provided great encouragement for everyone involved in the program."

"As an advocate for life building educational opportunities for our students and families, I have found that there is nothing more valuable to our society than an African American male, willing and able to model and take a stand for integrity and excellence under every circumstance. In the two years I've known Clem, he has faithfully demonstrated the evidence that enables me to identify him as this type of model. His contribution of time and energy to the mentoring programs I'm involved in, have created a great foundation for long-term success for the work I do, and the students and families I serve."

Clem entered my life at a critical stage. My life was headed in a direction that I didn't want and it seemed like I had no control over it. I wanted to be successful but frequently caught myself in situations that were not the right path.

The first time I met Clem was in fall 2005. He came to my house and shared with me his personal life experiences. Clem told me: "Life is like sailing. You have to work hard to steer your life in the direction in which you want it to go. Although there will be hardships - storms, winds and floods - if you work hard, you decide where your destination will be." That quote stuck with me and so did he.

As we grew together he taught me a lot about being a man: responsibility, respect, humbleness. Clem counseled, mentored, guided and advised me in several aspects of my life. Clem never focused on just one aspect of me. He listened to anything and everything I had to say. As well as advised me on each issue.

  • I wrote down short term and long term goals. He helped me achieve them through our close relationship over time.
  • He never judged me once for my mistakes. One of the biggest lessons he taught me was to learn from my mistakes rather than let them get to me. He has an excellent way of reaching people and getting on their level.

"I look at him as my big brother and someone I can call when I need him. He is a very genuine man with a positive outlook on life and I have so much respect for him because of his pure clean heart and willingness to help people.

"When my wife and I needed some mentoring assistance for our teenage son in 2005, we contacted Clem Benton. I had worked with Clem when he was a liaison officer between the police and community, and especially working with youth and their families. He is highly gifted in connecting with people and has a tremendous passion to help young people.

Clem connected with our son promptly and established a solid ground of understanding and friendships with our son that was quite amazing. Clem went to school and met our son's teachers, had lunch with him at school and kept an open line of communication with him and us.

It was not a long time, before we started to notice the results of his counsel emerge in forms of the improved school grades, the new energy and positive outlook about life, family and citizenship.

We were, of course, were very pleased. But what was most amazing was how much our son was so highly pleased with the results. He felt very strongly that Clem's counsel needed to be shared with his friends and classmates. He therefore took it upon himself to make all the arrangements between the school, his teachers and classmates so Clem could give motivational classes to the students. I attended one of the sessions and it was great, to say the least.

Our son graduated from high school with great success and is now enrolled in a four-year program of a University. Amazingly he has now become a mentor himself and has his own group of high-school kids that he is coaching toward college and good citizenship.

It is with great pleasure that I write this about Clem Benton and with great hope so more youth and families can benefit from Clem's passion and wise counsel for young people."
